Pepe (pronounced pay-pay)
Yesterday was the last day of summer classes, and the kids enjoyed various exams, surprises, and general hanging out typical of any school at the end of session.
To celebrate the last day of classes in the comedor and to reward the kids for their hard work, especially those who studied Geography, Limón and I decided to let the kids spend the day cooking different foods from around the world for lunch.
Our menu:
Stir Fry (Asia), Pasta (Italy), Corndogs (USA), Empanadas (Latin America), & Ethiopian Punch (duh).
Explaining the geographically diverse food selection to the kids
We had a good time as Limón used his Macaroni Grill skills to masterfully work the stove as he stir-fried and tossed noodles and oil. Meanwhile, I heated up the corndogs, mixed the punch, and I filled pre-made pastry dough with baked apples to make empanadas (clearly just as difficult and demanding as the things Limón was making).
The Master Chef & His Assistant
I take charge of the corndogs! (Such skill…)
We managed not to poison anybody, Chuyita & Jenna didn’t kick us out of the kitchen, and the kids had a lot of fun, so all-in-all the day was a success.
Slurping noodles is an international practice
Jenna had never eaten a corndog before. Now she has.
By the way, if you’ve been looking for a new punch to serve sometime, Ethiopian punch is a winner! Here’s the recipe:
1 cup orange juice
1 cup pineapple juice
1 cup grape juice
1 cup lemon juice (we used lime)
1 cup maraschino cherry juice (we dumped in the cherries too)
1 cup raspberry syrup (we didn’t use this, not available in the grocery stores)
2.5 qts water, sparkling water, or 7-Up (we used the latter)
Orange slices
Dump it all together, mix it up, put in the orange slices as a garnish, a bunch of ice to keep it cold and drink up!
And remember, next time you’re in the neighborhood and feeling daring, stop by and try out Restaurante Pepe y Limón!

Pay-Pay....
Just to let you know, after the corn dog was forcefully shoved in my mouth, I took it out and shared it with Aaron and Diego. I still have not eaten a corn dog. :)
Pepe ~
You know how to put on a fun last day of summer school. You are all giving the kids good experiences and good memories. The punch sounds interesting!
Praying for you all,
The Earney's
In a world of only a few brave men, someone has to managed the corn dogs. Did you really have to represent the USA with this food atrocity? ;)
Jenna: Well then, watch your back. One of these days there will be a corndog headed your way.
Anonymous: You're right. Sometimes the corndogs get out of control and someone really needs to be there to manage them. Also, the kids here already count hamburgers and pizza (both of the USA) among their favorite foods, so why not give them a true cultural taste of the food that every child in the USA (except Jenna) grows up with?

Jenna, I'm with you. Corndogs are nasty.
Is Traever reading this blog? Corndogs and chicken patties will forever remind me of Traever.
