Ready, Set...SAIL!

Carissa and Denise restarted our reading program with "Reading Around the World." However, this trip we are going in sailboats, not cars, and the single staffers are included in the competition.

Each lap "around the world" is 5000 minutes worth of reading with prizes every 500 minutes. In the last round Lupita won with almost 9000 minutes.

The first day to read was on Friday afternoon. Gloria, Seth, Joel and I were sitting in the kitchen talking about "important adult stuff." One of the girls came to the door and asked, "Can I read?" With this reminder, we quickly vacated the kitchen and made a direct line to the schoolroom door.

Carissa is definitely ready to have the next few weeks over with b/c hopefully we will tone down our competiteveness. :) She kept repeating, "this is a program for the kids." We tried every angle to manipulate the situation, but without much luck.

A mature adult: Carissa, can we read outside?

Carissa: No.

Another mature adult: Can I read in the library?

Carissa: No.

Mature adult #3: Do we seriously have to read in Spanish?

Carissa: YES!

Joel had the guts to get up from his book to take pictures. He captured this photo of Carissa telling him that he was going to lose his points.

This picture was bravely snapped by Joel after Carissa told me that I had to move away from Francisco b/c the other girls couldn't sit by boys on pillows.

Paola tries to read in English. I actually put a stop to that one.

Last round's winner is convinced she will do it again!

Seth grabbed Daniel b/c when you read with a young reader it is double points. (he thinks he is going to win. Yeah right Seth.) Although, I can't be too cocky b/c my sails have recently lost their wind and I am stuck in the water.

Oh this is funny. Carissa can run a pretty tight ship, and let me tell you when she stomps her foot...she means business! :0)
It is a great program, by the way!!

There is a reason that I decorated my ships sails with flames.

If you "adults" are reading, the kids will read more. Good plan!

Read on!

I have a question on the rules. Is there a penalty for reading a book in Spanish that you already read in English? I might be mistaken, but I thought that Joel was a pretty avid reader of the Chronicles of Narnia as a kid. Just thought I’d ask.

Luke, Nope, no penalties for that. (I may be strict, but not impossible!) Thanks for the heads-up though. :) I think it actually helps to figure out words you don't know when you know what it is supposed to say... Amy should post an updated picture of the boats--they are doing amazing!

Carissa: When Seth isn't "listening" to the younger kids he reads picture books to himself.

Luke,
Family is supposed to support family! I mean, come on, at least you could help me think of a way to get extra points without actually reading... uh oh, gotta go, Carissa is asking why I am not reading! :)

Ames,

read some posts, and wow you are way better at the blog thing. I know we shouldn't gamble with a small childs life, but I have 2 dollars Australian that the champ repeats. Take it or leave it!
