Learning to Drive

"Amy, driving an automatic transmission car is like showering with your raincoat on!" said my dad while he was trying to convince me to broaden my horizons. I mumbled back, "i like raincoats." With that statement I put my foot down, I was not going to consider a manual-zero interest in driving one.

Until last night. The donated car came down with JoeMama and Gloria and I decided as this is to be a main mode of transportation, it was time to learn. (Jenna, I am so sad you weren't here!) Joel and Limón graciously said they would teach us how to drive it. After we had permission from Joe and he said that the back wheels won't fall off if we are nice to it, and MANY promises from the guys that they wouldn't yell at us if we killed it or forgot about the clutch, we began our lessons.

So maybe things got a little out of hand. I just told them that I wrecked a dirt bike into a barn and look at the results.

We put on the appropriate gear.

Gloria, our resident nurse, shows Joel how to use an EpiPen if there should happen to be an extreme allergic reaction. :)

They wanted to show us the official "race car entry." (We didn't drive it like a race car!) They posed for the photo, climbed out and then entered through the door.

They graciously backed the car out for us, parked it in front of the kids lined up at the fence to watch the show, "Amy, get in the driver's seat."

I think we actually did a pretty good job. (I am judging this by the fact I don't have a sore neck) We parked the car, despite protest, when they told Gloria and I that we are NOT ready for the main street yet. :( Oh well, there is always tomorrow.

I must say that driving a manual has to be one of the best things in life.... Actually, making fun of those who are learning to drive a manual is much more entertaining.

My favorite parts were when "someone" killed the car in front of the neighbor kids... for the 5th time. And, the confused looks on the neighbors' faces as we kept on driving around "the block".

Tomorrow's Lesson: Steep hills with lots of traffic in front of a school.

Limón,... I feel like your driving me crazy!!!

"... clutch before brake, clutch before brake, clutch before brake..."
O.k, I'm going to try to remenber that for the next time.

But... todavia, thank you guys for the lessons and all the diversion, even when we killed the car like 100 times, it was so much fun.

And... Amy, this is just another great post of yours. Thank you para bloggear,

te quiero,
gloria

Just don't ask Limón to teach you how to back out of parking spots - especially at a McDonald's.
