This afternoon was perfect for a funeral. Rain drenched the truck windows as Gloria drove a quiet Blanca, Magda and I out to the gravesite where their grandpa was to be buried. I had never been in a Mexican graveyard before, and when we entered my breath was taken away. The graveyard is literally full to the brink. Everywhere you look, there is a picture of one of the saints or a crucifix with Jesus depicted on the cross. To get to the burial site we had to walk on other graves. It was so full, I can't describe it. I thought about how many people have died just represented in this one graveyard, entrenched in idol worship and in deep superstition, worshipping symbols, but missing salvation. As we stood observing the burial on the grave of "Gerardo" I was shaken as I thought of how fleeting life truly is. Solomon says it best in Ecc 2 I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart took delight in all my work, and this was the reward for all my labor. Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun. Ecc 2:10-11.
Meaningless...without the knowledge of Christ, the lives of those now represented by the tombs, pursuing things of the world and dying, never hearing or simply not believing God's redemption through Jesus. Please pray for those of Magdalena and those around you, That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, Ephesians 1:17-19
I will try to take pictures of the graveyard and publish them when I get a chance.
